EGSHPA Launch

London – May 23rd 2011 – The European Ground Source Heat Pump Association (EGSHPA), an independent industry body established to support the interests of the geothermal industry, has this week gone live with its new web portal and online ‘magazine’ offering.

Heavily focused on the technology and engineering issues that concern ground source heat pumps, www.egshpa.com will serve to engage the community with informative data as well as thought-provoking discussion and opinion. Members of EGSHPA itself will use the new portal to encourage non-members to engage in proactive discussions.

This engaging resource has videos to help explain the processes that are currently driving the industry. There are online tools for user energy cost calculations, as well as case studies and articles to help grow the user’s knowledge base.

EurObserv’ER has released its annual publication ‘The State of Renewable Energies in Europe’, a synthesis of the Technology Barometers published during 2010 (with data up to and including 2009). The publication gives detailed capacity and energy performance data for all 27 Member States of the European Union for all renewable energy technologies.

EHPA award "Heat pump city of the year"

Europe's climate protection and energy savings targets are demanding. It requires immediate action on all political levels to achieve meaningful results by 2020 already. Heat pumps are an available, reliable, efficient and cost effective solution in this quest. Unfortunately the technology is often very well hidden in basements and technic-rooms of buildings.

Recommendations from the UK’s heat pump trial

Results have been published from the UK’s largest field trial monitoring 83 heat pumps installed in UK homes. The trial has been undertaken to determine the key factors that impact the performance of domestic heat pumps.

Conducted by the Energy Saving Trust, one of the UK's leading organisations set up to mitigate the effects of climate change, the field trial considered both technical parameters, such as system sizing and installation, as well as customer feedback and behaviour.

The findings show the heat pump performance to be highly dependent upon appropriate installation and integration with the building’s existing heating system, as well as appropriate control by the customer. As a result, the Energy Saving Trust is calling on industry to improve heat pump installation techniques to ensure they become a quality and mainstream technology for householders.

Zero Carbon Britain possible in 2030.

A report by the UK's Centre for Alternative Technology offers a roadmap for addressing carbon emissions in the UK. It proposes a 90% reduction by 2030, which will be possible thanks to applying heat pumps at a large scale and reducing f-gas emissions among other measures.

IEAs has recognised the contribution of the EU energy policies

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has recognised the contribution of the EU energy policies in the fight against climate change but highlighted that if global temperature rise is to be kept below 2 ° Celsius, much remains to be done. This is one of the main messages of a presentation of the IEA's World Energy Outlook 2009 (WEO 2009) for European Commission high level officials, hosted by Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs today. The IEA's Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka and Chief Economist Fatih Birol presented the recent upheavals in energy markets and discussed their implications for EU policies.

Energy-saving buildings: agreement reached between the Council and the Parliament

All buildings built after 31 December 2020 must have high energy-saving standards and be powered to a large extent by renewable energy. Public authorities will lead the way two years earlier and part of the funding for these changes will come from the EU. These are among the key points of a deal reached on Tuesday evening between Parliament and Council negotiators.

UK housebuilder offers homes for sale that meet all different levels of Government's Code for Sustai

Miller Homes, a UK housebuilder has designed and built five homes in Merton Rise, Basingstoke, that comply with the Government's Code for Sustainable Homes, a national standard to reduce carbon emissions from dwellings. Each of the five homes has been built to meet a different level of the Code with Code 6 being a carbon zero building. The incorporated technologies and techniques will reduce water consumption, energy use, CO2 emissions, waste and pollution. Key features are: - triple glazed windows - underfloor heating - rain water harvesting - biomass boiler - photovoltaic solar panels - ground source heat pump The UK Government plans to make Code 6 mandatory for all new build properties by 2016.

Embassy to become a zero emission building

The German embassy building in Canberra, Australia, will be soon retrofitted in an energy efficient way. The foreign ministry has assigned Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics to develop an energy efficient retrofit concept which aims at an emission free building use. The retrofit shall be realised with high-tech products of the German building and service system industry allowing the building to be operated with zero CO2 emissions if balanced over the year.

Danish project provides HP subsidies

The Danish Energy Agency has announced a research project aiming to measure the effectiveness of energy-labeled heat pumps. The project will award grants of up to 15,000 DKK (about €2,000) to 300 households for the installation of heat pumps that are energy-labeled, while additional funding wil be available for the metering equipment.

Energy Guidebooks

The German energy agency "dena" has published several guidebooks on how to reduce the energy consumption of houses targeted towards building owners and tenants.

UK heat pump potential greater than previously thought

As the UK Government is heading towards setting up a Renewable Heat Incentive, a Government commissioned study has significantly revised upwards the renewable heat potential offered by heat pumps. The document maintains that most renewable heat at low cost could come from the industrial and commercial/public sectors.

Tony Blair recognises heat pumps’ potential

A report led by former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair recognises heat pumps as one of the key technologies to provide significant emissions reductions. Being a technology for which pull factors for commercial investment are required already in the short run, heat pumps could achieve significant savings if deployed in 50 to 70% of buildings in the OECD by 2050.

Ikea Geothermal Visit

A senior member of GeoPro Design visited the Geothermal installation at Ikea in Uppsala, Sweden as part of a geothermal training program. The European Commission is creating a seriesof geothermal training programs and invited industry experts to assist with the development of the program, during the 4 day event a visit to Ikea was arranged which is heated and cooled via a GSHP.

Radio Interview

The purpose of the interview was to increase awareness of GSHP and its use in warmer climate. As the use of carbon taxes encourage a move away from reliance on fossil fuels and the expanding use of subsidies, grants and tax incentives combine to make energy production from renewables increasingly viable.

IKEA Go Green....!

Swedish IKEA stores already obtain over 90% of their energy needs from renewable sources - primarily hydro power with some wind power. With their new store in Karlstad, Sweden, IKEA are going one step further using geothermal power sourced from the store's site.
